What Is a Three-Way Switch?
A three-way switch is a wall switch arrangement that controls one light or fixture from separate locations. Unlike a single-pole switch, it works with another three-way switch through traveler wires. Either switch can change the fixture's state, which makes the arrangement useful in hallways, stairways, bedrooms, and rooms with more than one entrance.

Key Takeaways About Three-Way Switch
- It controls one fixture from separate switch locations.
- Traveler wires connect the switches within the circuit.
- It is not the same as a three-position dimmer.
How Three-Way Switch Works

A three-way switch does not have a simple on and off position. Each switch contains a common terminal and traveler terminals. The common terminal connects to the power feed or the fixture wire, while traveler wires carry the switching path between the paired switches.

Changing either switch alters the path through the circuit. If the switches are wired correctly, either location can turn the light on or off, regardless of the other switch's position. A single-pole switch controls a fixture from one location, so replacing one with a three-way switch does not create a working multi-location control by itself.

From the Center Electric Service team
When we inspect a three-way switch, we identify the common terminal, trace the traveler wires, and verify the fixture connection. We also check whether a loose terminal, worn switch, or altered wiring is causing inconsistent operation. Our team treats the wire position as important because similar-looking terminals can serve different functions.
Three-Way Switch in Practice: A Real-World Example
A hallway light may need control near each entrance. A three-way switch arrangement lets someone change the light from either location without walking back to the other switch.
