What Is Aluminum Wire?

Aluminum wire is an electrical conductor made from aluminum metal. It carries current through branch circuits, feeders, and other parts of a building’s wiring system. Aluminum is lighter than copper and expands or contracts more with temperature changes. Those properties affect connection methods, terminal compatibility, and the condition of devices connected to the wire.

Key Takeaways About Aluminum wire

  • Aluminum weighs less than copper.
  • Connections need terminals rated for aluminum conductors.
  • Aluminum wire is not the same as aluminum-clad cable.

How Aluminum wire Works

Aluminum wire carries electric current through a metal path between a power source and an electrical load. Wire gauge describes the conductor's size, while insulation identifies the wire's intended use. Aluminum conductors need compatible terminals because the metal responds differently to heat and connection pressure than copper.

At a connection, the conductor sits beneath a terminal screw, connector, or approved wire connector. Current flows when the metal-to-metal contact remains firm and clean. A loose or incompatible connection can create heat, discoloration, or intermittent power. A wire nut made for the conductor type and a properly rated device help create a suitable connection.

Replacement work may involve tracing the circuit, inspecting accessible connections, and matching new materials to the existing wiring. A dedicated circuit can also require separate planning when a replacement changes the connected load.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we inspect aluminum wire, we check accessible connections, conductor size, insulation condition, and device compatibility. Our team also looks for heat marks, loose terminations, or connectors that do not match the conductor. For replacement work, we document the circuit path before selecting compatible materials.

Aluminum wire in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Riverside home may have aluminum wire serving receptacles in a bedroom. During an aluminum wiring replacement, the electrician traces that circuit, checks its accessible connections, and replaces incompatible wiring or devices with materials suited to the planned installation.
