What Is Arc Flash?

Arc Flash is a sudden electrical discharge through air between energized conductors or a conductor and ground. The discharge releases intense heat, light, sound, and pressure. Arc flash can occur when a fault creates an unintended path for current. The event can damage equipment and injure people near the electrical source.

Key Takeaways About Arc Flash

  • Arc flash travels through air during an electrical fault.
  • The event can damage equipment and surrounding enclosures.
  • Arc flash is not the same as an arc-fault breaker.

How Arc Flash Works

Arc Flash begins when electrical current leaves its intended path and crosses an air gap. The fault may form between energized conductors or between a conductor and grounded metal. Air becomes conductive during the event, which allows current to continue moving through the gap.

The resulting energy can produce a bright flash, extreme heat, pressure, and molten metal. The severity depends on conditions such as available electrical energy, the distance from the source, and how quickly protective equipment interrupts the fault. A short circuit can create the initiating fault, while overcurrent protection may limit its duration. During an Electrical Safety Inspection, inspectors look for damaged insulation, loose connections, exposed energized parts, and enclosure conditions that could contribute to an arc flash.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we perform an Electrical Safety Inspection, we examine accessible equipment for conditions that could support an arc flash. We check connections, enclosures, conductor insulation, and signs of overheating. Our team records concerns so the electrical system can be reviewed and corrected in an orderly way.

Arc Flash in Practice: A Real-World Example

During an Electrical Safety Inspection, a loose connection inside a panel may show heat damage and discoloration. That condition can create an unintended current path if insulation fails or conductive material bridges energized parts.
