What Is a Bidirectional Charger?

A bidirectional charger is an EV charging device that can move electrical energy in both directions. It can send power from the electrical system to an electric vehicle battery and, when supported, send stored energy back to a home or other approved load. This function supports vehicle-to-home and related backup-power applications.

Quick Facts About Bidirectional Charger

Category

EV power conversion equipment

Used for

Vehicle charging and backup-power transfer

Common confusion

A standard EV charger usually sends power one way

Key Takeaways About Bidirectional Charger

  • Two-way energy flow distinguishes this charger from a standard EV charger.
  • Vehicle compatibility and system controls determine whether backup power works.
  • A bidirectional charger is not the same as a transfer switch.

How Bidirectional Charger Works

A bidirectional charger manages energy flow between an electric vehicle battery and a building electrical system. The charger converts power between the form used by the utility system and the direct current stored in the battery. Controls coordinate charging and power delivery based on the connected equipment.

Backup operation usually includes a compatible vehicle, a properly arranged connection, and equipment that separates selected loads from the utility supply when needed. A transfer switch may help control that separation, while a battery inverter can support power conversion in related systems. The charger does not automatically make every EV suitable for home backup.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we plan a bidirectional charger installation, we check vehicle compatibility, available electrical capacity, and the loads that need backup power. We also review the connection between the charger, the electrical panel, and any transfer equipment so the system operates as one coordinated installation.

Bidirectional Charger in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Riverside homeowner with a compatible EV may connect the vehicle to a bidirectional charger that supplies selected home circuits during a utility interruption. The installation can direct power to those circuits through the planned backup-power equipment while keeping other loads disconnected.
