What Is a Lug?

Lug is a metal connector that secures an electrical conductor to a terminal, busbar, breaker, or other connection point. A lug uses a clamping screw, set screw, or compression method to hold the conductor firmly. In an electrical panel, the lug transfers current between the conductor and the connected component.

Key Takeaways About Lug

  • A lug is a connector, not a circuit protection device.
  • The conductor must match the lug’s approved size and material.
  • A lug is often confused with the terminal it attaches to.

How Lug Works

A hand holds a metal cable lug against a bolted strip on a machine outdoors

Lug works by creating a mechanical hold and an electrical contact between a conductor and a connection point. The conductor enters the lug opening, and a screw or compression mechanism holds the conductor in place. The connection point may be a busbar, circuit breaker, or panel terminal.

Lugs are selected for the conductor material, conductor size, connection type, and available space. A compatible lug keeps the conductor positioned correctly and maintains contact through normal panel operation. A loose, damaged, or mismatched lug can increase electrical resistance and create heat at the connection. Panel repair may include checking the lug, conductor end, terminal surface, and surrounding insulation for signs of damage.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we inspect a lug during an electrical panel repair, we check its physical condition and the conductor’s connection. We look for looseness, discoloration, heat damage, damaged threads, and conductor strands that do not sit correctly. Our team also verifies that the lug suits the connected conductor and panel component.

Lug in Practice: A Real-World Example

A panel repair may involve a lug that no longer holds a feeder conductor firmly. The repair process can include inspecting the conductor end, checking the terminal connection, and replacing damaged parts when the connection cannot be restored properly.
