What Is a Service Entrance?

Service Entrance is the point where electrical power enters a building from the utility system and connects to the building’s electrical equipment. It includes the conductors, fittings, disconnecting equipment, and other components that carry and control incoming power before electricity moves through branch circuits serving lights, outlets, appliances, and equipment.

Key Takeaways About Service Entrance

  • It marks the transition between utility power and building wiring.
  • Its components support incoming power before circuits distribute electricity.
  • It is not the same as a load center or meter alone.

How Service Entrance Works

Service Entrance equipment receives power from the utility connection and routes it toward the building’s main disconnect and distribution equipment. Service-entrance conductors carry incoming power, while enclosures, raceways, connectors, and grounding components support the connection. The arrangement depends on the building layout and the location of the utility connection.

The service entrance sits before equipment such as the load center, which sends power to individual circuits. A service disconnect provides a controlled point for shutting off incoming power during work or an emergency. During an electrical service upgrade, the condition and capacity of these connected parts must be considered together, because changing one component can affect the rest of the service.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we assess a service entrance, we inspect the incoming conductors, connections, enclosures, grounding path, and relationship to the main distribution equipment. We also look for heat damage, corrosion, loose terminations, and outdated components that could affect an electrical service upgrade.

Service Entrance in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Riverside homeowner planning an electrical service upgrade may have utility conductors entering an exterior meter enclosure before power reaches the main disconnect and panel. We examine that complete path so the upgraded equipment matches the existing connection and building layout.
