What Is Conduit?
Conduit is a protective raceway that surrounds and guides insulated electrical wires or cables. It may consist of metal or nonmetallic tubing and can run through walls, along surfaces, or underground. Conduit helps organize wiring, shields conductors from physical damage, and supports access for future inspection or replacement.

Key Takeaways About Conduit
- A raceway protects wires without carrying electrical current itself.
- The route and environment influence conduit selection.
- Conduit is not the same as direct-burial cable.
How Conduit Works

Conduit creates a continuous route for insulated conductors between electrical equipment and connection points. Installers select a raceway material and shape that suit the surroundings, then pull or place the conductors inside it. Bends and fittings help the route change direction while keeping the wiring organized.

Underground installations use conduit to protect wiring from soil contact and physical disturbance. The installation also depends on the trench route, entry points, drainage conditions, and access needs. Direct-burial cable follows a different installation method because its construction allows placement in suitable soil without a separate raceway. A junction box may connect conduit sections or provide an accessible point for wire connections.

From the Center Electric Service team
When we plan underground electrical installation, we review the route, entry points, conductor path, and surrounding conditions before selecting conduit. We check that fittings connect properly and that the completed route protects the wiring without creating avoidable bends or access problems. Our team also verifies conductor placement before final connections.
Conduit in Practice: A Real-World Example
An underground feeder serving a detached garage may run inside conduit from the main electrical equipment to the garage. The route protects the conductors below grade and leaves a defined path for inspection or future work.
