What Is a Photocell?

Photocell is a light-sensing electrical control that changes a circuit’s operation when surrounding light levels shift. In outdoor lighting, the device commonly turns fixtures on as daylight fades and off as daylight returns. A photocell helps automate lighting without requiring a person to operate a wall switch or timer.

Key Takeaways About Photocell

  • Light level, not motion, activates a photocell.
  • Placement affects when connected lighting switches.
  • A photocell is not the same as a motion sensor.

How Photocell Works

Hands hold a small blue photocell device above a workbench with pliers and a screwdriver nearby

A photocell detects changes in visible light through a light-sensitive component. The control compares the surrounding light with its operating threshold, then opens or closes an electrical switching path. That action sends power to connected lighting or removes power from it.

Outdoor fixtures often place the sensor where daylight can reach it without direct light from the fixture. A shaded, dirty, or poorly aimed sensor can respond at the wrong time. A timer follows a programmed schedule, while a photocell responds to actual light conditions. Some commercial lighting systems combine both controls to manage operation across changing seasons and site conditions.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we install or troubleshoot a photocell, we check its orientation, wiring, enclosure, and connection to the lighting circuit. We also test the control under changing light conditions to separate a sensor problem from a fixture, switch, or supply problem.

Photocell in Practice: A Real-World Example

A commercial parking area can use a photocell to operate pole lights as daylight fades. The sensor allows the lighting schedule to follow actual site conditions without relying on staff to switch the circuit manually.
