What Is a Service Drop?

A service drop is the part of an electrical service that carries power from the utility distribution system to a building’s service equipment. The connection may run overhead from a utility pole or underground through service conductors. It ends at the point where the utility supply connects with the building’s electrical system.

Key Takeaways About Service Drop

  • It connects utility conductors with building service equipment.
  • Its route may be overhead or underground.
  • It is not the same as a branch circuit.

How Service Drop Works

Service Drop

A service drop carries electricity between the utility supply and a building’s service equipment. An overhead route uses conductors that extend from a utility pole toward the building. An underground route runs through buried service conductors before reaching the service point.

The service drop connects with equipment such as the service panel and the utility meter area. Electricians inspect the conductors, connection points, supports, and visible insulation during electrical troubleshooting. A fault in this part of the system can affect the building’s incoming power without being caused by an interior branch circuit.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we troubleshoot an electrical problem, we check whether the issue begins at the service drop, the meter area, or the building’s service equipment. We look for damaged conductors, loose connections, physical strain, and signs that incoming power is not reaching the panel correctly.

Service Drop in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Riverside home may lose power to the whole panel while nearby utility service remains active. During electrical troubleshooting, we trace the incoming conductors and inspect the service drop connection before testing interior circuits.
