What Is a Cable Tray?

A cable tray is a support system that routes and protects electrical cables in commercial and industrial spaces. The open framework may be made from metal or other approved materials. Cable trays organize cable runs above ceilings, along walls, or across equipment areas while allowing access for inspection, maintenance, and future changes.

Key Takeaways About Cable Tray

  • Open construction provides access around the cable run.
  • Tray layout supports orderly routing above ceilings and equipment.
  • Cable tray is not the same as conduit.

How Cable Tray Works

Cable tray carries grouped cables along a planned route between electrical equipment, distribution points, and connected systems. Sections join together to form a continuous path, while supports hold the assembly at selected points along the route. Open sides and surfaces let installers inspect cable placement without opening a cover.

Tray selection depends on the cable type, route, available space, and environmental conditions. A ladder-style tray suits many power cable runs because its cross members support cables while leaving space for ventilation. Solid-bottom or covered sections may suit locations that need added protection. Installers also plan bends, transitions, clearances, and access points so cables do not experience sharp turns or excessive strain.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we plan cable tray for a commercial electrical installation, we review the route, cable grouping, support points, and access for maintenance. Our team also checks transitions into equipment and confirms that tray sections align with the surrounding electrical layout.

Cable Tray in Practice: A Real-World Example

A commercial tenant improvement may use cable tray above a suspended ceiling to route feeders from a distribution panel to equipment areas. The tray keeps the runs orderly and leaves access for future inspection or service.
