What Is a Tamper-Resistant Outlet?

A tamper-resistant outlet is a receptacle with internal shutters that block access to the energized contacts unless both slots receive pressure at the same time. The shutters help prevent objects from entering one slot alone. This design supports safer outlet installation in homes, offices, and other spaces where children may be present.

  • Plugs open both shutters during normal use.
  • Tamper-resistant does not mean GFCI protected.

How Tamper-resistant outlet Works

A tamper-resistant outlet uses spring-loaded shutters behind the contact openings. A normal plug applies matching pressure to both openings, which moves the shutters aside and allows the plug blades to connect. An object inserted into one opening does not normally move the shutters.

Electricians check the receptacle type, wiring connections, grounding path, and fit within the electrical box during outlet installation. A tamper-resistant receptacle may also include features found on other outlet designs, such as GFCI protection, but the two functions serve different purposes. Shutters address access to the contacts, while GFCI protection responds to electrical current leaving its intended path.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we install a tamper-resistant outlet, we inspect the box, conductors, grounding, and terminal connections before securing the receptacle. We also check that the outlet sits firmly, the plug fits correctly, and any required protective device is identified separately from the tamper-resistant feature.

Tamper-resistant outlet in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner requests Electrical Outlet Installation in a child’s bedroom. We select a tamper-resistant receptacle that matches the circuit and confirm that the shutters open smoothly with a standard plug.
